Getting Started (General)
Voiceitt is an accessibility app for people with speech disabilities or impairments.
It translates atypical speech to facilitate communication using your voice with people and smart assistants. Voiceitt learns how you say a phrase, so it’s ready to use in every day conversations and routines.
We know that the pandemic has affected our community disproportionately, so we are offering Voiceitt at no cost for a limited time to mitigate any hardships created by the pandemic and improve the quality of life for as many people as possible.
Voiceitt can be used without any support, because our app is designed to be accessible and easy to use. If you’d like, though, you can consult your clinician about use.
At Voiceitt we are committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We have created our app and website to meet the highest standards of accessibility and continually improving the user experience for everyone.
We are welcoming any feedback to continue and improve our design for the app and the website and encourage you to let us know how we can improve at firstname.lastname@example.org
Is Voiceitt for me?
Voiceitt is great for you if you fit the following criteria:
- You’re age 16 or above
- Able to operate mobile devices
- Can be understood by familiar listeners (family and caregivers) but not by strangers
- Able to understand written app instructions
- Use utterances to convey a message (ex. asking for food when hungry)
Have consistent pronunciation but difficulty being understood by others or smart home systems
- Socially motivated and interested in new technologies
Voiceitt can help users who have Cerebral Palsy, ALS, Down Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injuries, Parkinson’s, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, and Autism.
Voiceitt works as a helper for your spoken communication by learning how you pronounce phrases. Voiceitt works best if you can be understood by familiar listeners (family and caregivers) but not by strangers or voice/ smart assistants.
Voiceitt is language independent, so it understands your unique pronunciation, no matter the language.
Try your speech with Voiceitt free here.
In the app, you can create a dictionary of phrases and train the app to recognize your unique pronunciation of each phrase. The app will only recognize phrases from your personalized dictionary, but you can add and train as many phrases as you want. At this time, the app will not translate phrases that have not been trained.
We know that communication is personal, so we made Voiceitt customizable to you- choose, add, or create the scenarios and phrases you want.
Voiceitt was developed with and tested by people with speech and motor disabilities. We know that speech levels may vary, so we encourage you to try Voiceitt for yourself. We are offering Voiceitt free for a limited time here!
Currently, the app is only compatible with iPhones and iPads, iOS version 12 and up.
To check your version, go to Settings > General > Software Version. If you don’t have version 12 and above, go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
To use Voiceitt for communication, you don’t need any additional devices, just your iOS device that has Voiceitt installed.
To use Voiceitt with Smart Homes, you’ll need your smart home device or assistant and your iOS device.
A microphone can be used for better recognition if your speech is quiet.
To use Voiceitt for communication, you don’t need internet connection after training. Voiceitt is ready to recognize your speech everywhere– at a coffee shop, day program, or doctor’s office.
To use Voiceitt with your smart home, you’ll need an internet connection for training and communicating with devices.
The time it takes to train Voiceitt varies from person to person. Generally, you can expect to spend just a few minutes training for a phrase to become available to use! Phrases will unlock after you record about 3 sessions, or 30 repetitions.
Since Voiceitt learns an individual’s unique speech patterns, it can accommodate phrases in any language. The app interface (including instructions, settings page, error messages, etc.) are available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Hebrew. The app’s pre-written phrases are all in English. You can create custom phrases and scenarios in whichever language you choose. To learn more, please visit: How to Build Phrases in Your Language
Voiceitt allows, for the first time, people with non-standard speech to communicate with smart home devices and assistants, making sure they understand and recognize your speech. You’ll need a smart home device or assistant like:
- Amazon Alexa devices
- Google Home device
- Apple Home Pod
- Apple Home Kit
- Any other Smart Assistant
For Alexa devices, Voiceitt can integrate directly with your device inside the app. You’ll connect your Alexa device, then speak to Voiceitt, and Alexa will complete the command. You can turn your music, TV, and lights on or off; get the weather and news; or set timers and hear jokes– all with your voice.
For other devices, Voiceitt’s output will complete the communication with your device. You’ll create custom scenarios for your device, speak to Voiceitt, and Voiceitt’s output speech will make sure your device understands the command.
